The bootmem patch is an experimental patch using an alternative mechanism for tracking bootmem allocations. Some of its specific goals are directed toward handling sparse and irregular memory layouts, and also within the source are comments explaining in more detail the code's motivations, goals, and mechanisms. While some assistance has been received from the core team, this patch is still very experimental, immature, and it is not necessarily the case that there is any consensus that this should become the mainline kernel's mechanism. Also, although quite a bit of verification of present functionality is underway, more features are to come, and so this implementation is even also incomplete. This said, the author is grateful for any testing done on his behalf, and any reports of either success or failure of operation on any architecture are much appreciated. -- wli Sun Nov 25 16:33:23 PST 2001
