What file formats does hugo support?

Hugo supports the XPM, TIFF and BSB file formats.

When scanning maps in TIFF format use as few colors as possible. Try to avoid anything above 256 colors, because it would only make the resulting file huge without adding detail.

If you have a map in an unsupported file format, try converting it with xv or ImageMagick. Both applications come with most Linux distributions. ImageMagick wants to be started by typing 'display'.

Use the XPM format for relatively small maps only. This format is the fastest to display and pan, but does not support zooming. This format is useful for small maps and on slow machines.

The TIFF format is very flexible and should be used for huge high resolution maps. It supports zooming.

TIFF format maps support GeoTIFF extensions, which allow embedded georeferencing information in the map. USGS maps and those USGS aerial photo DOQs in TIFF format have this embedded georferencing; USGS DOQs in older formats can be converted with GDAL

The BSB format is a proprietary format of BSB Electronic Charts. It is used for their NOAA nautical charts. Please contact us about availability and prices at (408)461-0500.
